Since the NECP 2030 (National Energy and Climate Plan) was approved, its objectives have been overshadowed by the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis due to Europe’s dependence on Russian gas. However, it is now time to accelerate the energy transition at national and EU level.
At the meeting held by the third vice president and minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, with the employers and the main energy companies in the sector, the Government’s interest in being “much more ambitious” in the new objectives to 2030 was announced. And not only in renewables, but also in green hydrogen and biogas.
Reach 100% renewable
“You can aspire a lot with the objective of renewables, even some talk about that you can Reach 100% and I think it’s possible. I agree,” says Luis Villar, Financial and Market Adviser, specialized in M&A in renewables.
According to the expert “that would mean totally dispensing with gas combined cycles and nuclear power plants and for that to be possible, with security of supply, a very ambitious development of all storage technologies is needed: pumped hydro, green hydrogen and batteries”. In addition to a “much more ambitious development of the interconnections that would function as one more storage system”.
More hydrogen and more biogas
In the case of hydrogen and biogas (or biomethane), experts recognize that “as it computes the final demand, it would not affect the renewable energy objectives”. But they recognize that “the biogas sector has already taken off and soon we will see how the contribution to the system begins to be considerable. For hydrogen, we will have to wait a little longer.”
